Summer reading

The Palos Verdes Library District is holding summer reading programs through Aug. 13. There are three separate programs: one for kids in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, another for students in sixth through twelfth grades, and a third for adults, ages 18 and up. George F Canyon Guided Family Nature Preserve Walk

10:30 a.m., with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You will be guided by a trained naturalist to discover a unique variety of wildlife in their canyon habitat. Enjoy amazing views of the L.A. Basin. Meet on the back deck of the George F Canyon Nature Center. Parking in Preserve lot located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates. Volunteer opportunity

Volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Rapid Response Team Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon. Work alongside field staff around the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve to help protect important wildlife habitat. Help with trail maintenance, fence building, installing signage and more. 2nd Annual Alma Park Picnic

5K

The 4th of July 5K and Firecracker Dash in Redondo Beach returns for a 30th year. 8 a.m. start time. All participants will receive an event T-shirt. There will be chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K run. All kids’ dash finishers receive medals. 4th of July on Avenue I

5:30-8 p.m. every Thursday this summer at South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Blvd, Palos Verdes Estates. Guests can roam the Garden’s 87 acres and hang out at Dottie’s, the new food and beverage concessions station near the Living Wall, and take in that week’s musical performance. There’s also a Kids Zone with obstacle courses, lawn bowling, bubbles and more. The musicians will do two 45-minute sets. July’s lineup: July 6 — Disco Night with a live DJ, vocalist and trumpet player; July 13, Tom Petty cover band Runnin’ Down a Dream; July 20 — 80s and 90s hip hop with a live DJ, vocalist and saxophone player; July 27 — swing band Strada Swing. Docent Guided Nature Walk at George F Canyon Nature Preserve

Wander along a willow-filled canyon stream with native coastal sage scrub habitat. Look down on one of the only areas on the mainland where one can view Catalina schist, the bedrock that underlies most of the Los Angeles area. Visit the Nature Center to learn more about the local habitat and history. The theme for this walk is “Geology and Riparian Habitat.” 1 p.m. Easy.
