Govt to unveil biodiversity atlas of all 191 VPs

BICHOLIM: The State government will unveil biodiversity atlas of all 191 village panchayats in Goa and provide required help to preserve and maintain biodiversity.

This was stated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant after releasing the Mayem Biodiversity Atlas, India’s first Village Atlas at a function held at Mahamaya Devalaya Mandap, Mayem, Bicholim on Wednesday.

The function was jointly organised by the Mayem-Vaiguinim Village Panchayat, Biodiversity Management Committee of Mayem Vaiguinim and the Mayem Panlot Sangh.

Speaking on the occasion, Sawant said, “It is our duty to preserve our biodiversity and maintain it for future generations. To use biodiversity in a sustainable manner, using natural resources at a rate that the earth can renew them. Due to change in climatic conditions, the public should not suffer.”

The Chief Minister released a unique atlas book, dedicated website, poster and a logo during the celebrations. He also distributed prizes to the students, who excelled in various competitions.

Present on the occasion were Mayem MLA Premendra Shet, Mayem-Vaiguinim Sarpanch Suvarna Cho-dankar, Deputy Sarpanch Sufala Chopdekar, Bicholim BDO Shrikant Pednekar, Mayem-Vainguinim Biodiversity Management Committee chairman Sakharam Pednekar, Shree Kelbai Devasthan Samiti president Ramesh Prabhugaonkar and panchayat members.

Earlier, Sakharam Pednekar welcomed and briefed about the village Atlas project. MLA Premendra Shet, and Member Secretary of Goa State Biodiversity Board Dr Pradip Sarmokadam also spoke on the occasion. Harshada Gawas conducted the programme and Suvarna Chodankar proposed a vote of thanks.
