The University of Waterloo is investigating after a suspected ransomware attack on the school’s online systems.

A spokesperson told CBC News that the on-premises email server was compromised, but that “99.9 per cent our email users are not affected because their email services are hosted in the cloud.”

“Our IT team is working diligently to assess whether any further online systems were affected and is continuing to take steps to secure systems and data,” Rebecca Elming said in an emailed statement.

She added that anyone who now accesses the school’s systems will need to reset their password starting Friday as part of the security response.

According to Elming, the attack was interrupted while it was in progress.

Elming credits the “prompt actions of law enforcement agencies, our internal IT teams, Microsoft and external cybersecurity partners” who “acted quickly to identify and respond to this threat to avoid the worst outcomes.”

CBC KW has reached out to regional police, but no information was available at the time.
