Wijesekera and Menon studying 5G multi-access

Duminda Wijesekera, Acting Chair, Cyber Security Engineering, and Nirup Menon, Professor, Area Chair, and Dean’s Scholar, Information Systems and Operations Management, acquired funding from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority for the venture: “5G Multi-Access Mobile Edge Server Based Security and Learning for Smart Building.”

Modern buildings attempt to reinforce resilience and meet environmental targets similar to web zero vitality and carbon emissions. Existing constructing programs use disparate networks (e.g., BACnet, LonTalk, ZigBee, Bluetooth, WIFI, IP) to attach with subsystems similar to HVAC, elevators, lighting, and to bodily safety programs that open and shut doorways, garages, and present entry to access-controlled flooring utilizing elevators. These independently managed programs use proprietary protocols and cloud-based companies. Two main cybersecurity issues that come up from this are the dearth of general safety governance localized to the constructing operators’ infrastructure and the shortcoming to securely talk between programs. This, in flip, impacts the power to optimize the cyber-physical safety posture, and to optimize vitality utilization by opening a uniform safe platform to include newer applied sciences similar to photo voltaic rooftops, and vehicle-to-grid and grid-to-vehicle charging based mostly on value fluctuations throughout the time of day.

To develop and exploit a uniform safe platform, the researchers are working to handle two points: 1) a uniform id and cryptographic system that enhances safety for the Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets and cyber-physical programs that service giant buildings; and 2) the power to rapidly and absolutely function the constructing from a devoted server contained in the constructing that gives management to the constructing operator.

The researchers acquired $30,000 from the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority for this venture. Funding started in November 2021 and will finish in late February 2022.
