South Africa: HSRC Survey Finds 2021 Municipal Elections Free and Fair

An interim election satisfaction survey (ESS) evaluation has overwhelmingly decided that the 2021 Local Government Elections have been free and honest.

The survey was carried out by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). The HSRC was commissioned by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to conduct two research associated to the 2021 municipal elections. The first was a Voter Participation Survey (VPS) between September and October 2021. The ESS was the second and was carried out on Election Day.

In the report launched on Wednesday, the Council stated voters supplied an “overwhelmingly constructive” analysis of the administration efficiency of the Electoral Commission and its officers at voting stations.

“An overwhelming majority of sampled voters (95%) really feel that the election procedures have been free. Provincially, this ranges from 90% within the Western Cape to 98% in Mpumalanga.

“Similarly, 94% of the voters are of the opinion that the election procedures have been honest. Provincially, this determine varies between 90% within the Western Cape and 99% in Mpumalanga.”

“These voter evaluations level firmly to the continued integrity of elections within the nation,” the HSRC stated.

The HSRC sampled 12 000 voters from 300 voting stations throughout the nation.

Key amongst its findings was that 68% of voters took lower than quarter-hour to achieve their voting stations, with 22% taking between 16-Half-hour. Only 7% took between 31 and 60 minutes, and 3% longer than an hour.

On common, 77% of voters waited lower than quarter-hour within the queue earlier than voting, 15% took between 16 and Half-hour, whereas solely 7% waited for longer.
